ABOUT ASPHALT SHINGLE ROOFING IN NORTHERN ARIZONA

In the mountainous regions of Arizona, shingles must withstand wind, rain, and severe weather. Numerous manufacturers produce shingles, including GAF, Malarkey, CertainTeed, and Owens Corning. For the Prescott, Prescott Valley, Chino Valley, and Dewey areas, we often choose GAF shingles due to their excellent performance against the local weather conditions. As one of GAF’s Master Elite Contractors, we provide superior long-term extended warranties when installing their products.

TYPES OF SHINGLE ROOFS

Many people believe there is only one type of shingle available now, similar to the above photo. However, there are several different types of asphalt shingle roofs that are common in our area, from Prescott to Sedona to Flagstaff. Different HOA’s require different types of shingles on homes under their oversight, and of course different styles of homes call for different types of shingles.

First, there is the classic “3-tab” shingle like GAF Royal Sovereign. This used to be the only type of shingle available, and is still commonly seen on homes that haven’t been roofed in over 20 years. Nowadays, this type of shingle actually isn’t produced by many manufacturers as it has a flat appearance and shorter lifespan than many of the more modern styles. If you can find it, these can even cost more than modern shingles due to the lack of commercial production.

Next, there are architectural shingles like GAF HDZ or Malarkey Vista. This is the type of shingle in the above photo – probably one of the most common type of shingle you can find today. When most people think of shingle roofs, this is what comes to mind. These are typically made from two layers of asphalt glued together, with the top layer having a “shake” appearance. This creates a more “architectural” look on homes than the flat 3-tab shingles, while the double layer increases durability and lifespan.

Lastly, there are designer shingles such as Malarkey Windsor, GAF Grand Sequoia, and many more options. These shingles are made from 2 or 3 layers of asphalt for a heavier look, with the top layer being shaped more like a true shake, tile, or other design. This is the longest lasting type of shingle available today, typically lasting 30 or more years due to it’s thickness and durability.

Many HOA’s in the Prescott, Sedona, and Flagstaff areas require a designer shingle due to it’s upgrade in appearance over typical architectural shingles. Often this is done by your HOA specifying a “weight” of shingles, such as that shingles must be 255lb/square in weight or more (or whatever the number might be in your HOA). They do this in order to ensure that no 3-tab shingle would ever comply, because it’s only one layer and therefore not heavy. Then, most 2-layer architectural shingles would not comply, so you must use a 3 layer shingle that has a heavier weight, thereby upgrading the appearance of the neighborhood with higher end shingles.

As you can see, there are actually quite a few different options when it comes to choosing a particular style of shingle, let alone a color that matches your house and adds to curb appeal.

THE SHINGLE ROOF SYSTEM

An asphalt shingle roof comprises of several material layers. We start by removing existing roofing and cleaning the deck, replacing any rotten sheathing that is discovered upon removal of the old shingles and underlayment.

  1. Drip Edge Installation: We install a new drip edge in white, black, or brown to match your shingles and house colors.
  2. Ice and Water Barriers: GAF WeatherWatch barriers are installed in valleys and around roof penetrations, and at the eaves in higher elevations to prevent ice and water buildup.
  3. Synthetic Underlayment: We use GAF FeltBuster synthetic underlayment, which outperforms traditional felt by resisting drying and cracking.
  4. Shingle Installation: Shingles are installed from the eaves upward, with each course overlapping the previous one.
  5. Ridge Installation: Finally, we install the ridge to complete your roofing system.
THE GAF WARRANTIES

To offer GAF’s best warranties, we underwent rigorous training, testing, and proved years of experience and skill in installing their shingles. We provide two main warranties:

Silver Pledge Warranty

  • 10-year workmanship warranty
  • 50-year material warranty, non-prorated
  • Requires installation of at least four GAF products (e.g., synthetic underlayment, Pro-Start starter shingles, Timberline HDZ shingles, Z-Ridge)

Golden Pledge Warranty

  • 25-year workmanship warranty
  • 50-year material warranty, non-prorated
  • Requires installation of at least five GAF products (e.g., synthetic underlayment, ice and water barrier, Pro-Start starter shingles, Timberline HDZ shingles, Z-Ridge)

These warranties are transferable once to a new owner, adding value for potential buyers or family members inheriting your home. After completing your roofing project, we register your roof with GAF, and you receive a warranty certificate. This warranty covers leaks and premature shingle wear.

LIFESPAN AND WARRANTIES
GAF Timberline HDZ shingles allow us to offer up to a 25-year workmanship warranty and a 50-year material warranty with the Gold Pledge. This warranty requires using five GAF products. If not feasible, we offer a Silver Pledge warranty with a 10-year workmanship and 50-year material warranty, using four GAF products. Both warranties are non-prorated.
Modern shingles can last between 20-50 years, depending on exposure and manufacturer.

An asphalt shingle roof is a type of roofing material made from a fiberglass or organic mat coated with asphalt and topped with mineral granules. It is popular due to its affordability, durability, and ease of installation.

The best asphalt shingle roof depends on various factors, including climate, budget, and aesthetic preferences. GAF Timberline HDZ shingles are highly regarded for their performance and warranties.

Roofing shingles are typically made from materials like asphalt, fiberglass, organic mat, and mineral granules. These components create a durable, weather-resistant roofing material.

Roof shingles are individual overlapping elements laid in rows to cover a roof. They are designed to protect the roof from weather elements while providing an attractive appearance.
