ABOUT STANDING SEAM METAL ROOFING IN AZ
A standing seam metal roof consists of metal panels attached using concealed clips and fasteners, creating a seamless and waterproof system. The distinctive “standing seams” are the raised ridges where panels connect, providing excellent water drainage and adding a modern touch to your roof.
It can be used on roof slopes down to 1/2″ drop over every 12″ run if a mechanically seamed product is used, whereas standard standing seam products like Taylor Metal Products Versa Span can be used normally down to 2″ drop over every 12″ run.

At Yavapai Roofing, we specialize in installing a variety of standing seam metal roofs, from Prescott, to Cottonwood, to Flagstaff, and beyond.
Our preferred product is Taylor Metal Products Versa Span. Available in 12″, 14″, 16″, or 18″ wide panels and in either 22 or 24 gauge metal, this standing seam comes with a 40-year guarantee against fading, thanks to their baked-on Kynar 500 enamel finish. It also comes with different profile options, such as flat, striated, or with accent ribs, which can help minimize “oil canning” where the metal appears wavy in the sunlight due to natural expansion qualities of the metal itself.
With a wide range of color options, including standard and specialty colors like rust or copper-look, you can customize your roof to match your aesthetic. Taylor Metal Products carries dozens of color options that will fit the appearance of your house here in northern AZ.
In addition to Taylor Metal Products Versa Span, we also install other high-quality brands like AEP Span and Western States Metal Roofing, each offering unique installation techniques and color varieties. Feel free to look at their websites for the many color options that are available to you. We can obtain samples of colors as well for you to look at and compare to your house.
THE STANDING SEAM METAL ROOF IN ARIZONA
A well-installed standing seam metal roof is a long-term investment. We begin with a high-quality underlayment, such as FT Synthetics Platinum HT, a high-temperature resistant, self-adhering material that self-seals around screw holes, ensuring superior durability. This is an important step in proper installation as improper underlayment will decay faster and lead to issues with your roof. High temperature underlayment will resist the heat from the metal that is laid over it…if you’ve ever worked on a metal roof here in the Arizona summers, you know that this can be extremely hot, especially as you get lower in elevation down in the Phoenix area. Even areas like Flagstaff or Prescott might near 100 degrees, which means the metal roof itself can be up to 140 degrees or more in temperature, depending on the color.
After installing proper underlayment, the next steps include installing flashings in valleys and along eaves, followed by the metal panels, which are fastened with concealed clips. These concealed clips do a couple of things – first, they ensure that no fastener penetrations are made in the metal itself on the main roof areas, limiting the possibility of leaks. Second, they allow the metal roof to contract and expand with the cold or with the heat – highly important here in AZ with the extreme temperature variations from summer to winter, especially on roofs that are longer than 30′. Metal roofs will expand up to 1″ or more depending on the length of the panel, so the clips allow them to freely do so without breaking screws or tearing the metal, leading to potential leaks.
Standing seam panels then interlock to create a continuous, watertight surface, one lapped over the next at the seam all the way across the roof.
Finally, we install rake metal, ridge caps, penetration flashings, and other necessary components to complete the system.

LIFESPAN AND WARRANTIES
Standing seam metal roofing is a premium option, often costing more upfront than other roofing types. However, it offers exceptional longevity, with a lifespan of 50 years or more, depending on environmental factors. Using high-quality underlayment ensures the roof performs well for decades, providing excellent value over time.

Absolutely! Standing seam metal roofs offer superior durability, energy efficiency, and a long lifespan, often exceeding 50 years. They are resistant to extreme weather, fire, and pests, making them a reliable choice for homeowners looking for a long-term roofing solution.
The main disadvantages include higher upfront costs compared to other roofing materials and the need for specialized installation. Additionally, metal roofs can be noisy during heavy rain or hail without proper insulation.
A standing seam metal roof is a type of metal roofing system that features vertically running panels with raised seams or ridges, called “standing seams.” These seams connect the panels and conceal the fasteners, providing a sleek, modern look and superior weatherproofing.
The most popular system varies by region and manufacturer, but Taylor Metal Products Versa-Span is a top choice for its quality, customization options, and durability. Other popular brands include AEP Span, Western States Metal Roofing, and Custom-Bilt, each offering unique features to meet different needs.
